1. Sizing up the Project:
Planning the design and the location where the table is going to be kept is something very important when you decide to make a tabletop gaming table. So plan about how much high you want the table to be, do you want it to be mobile or stationary and other important details you want the table to have. Once you are done with it, you will have an organized idea of the table you are going to design.
2. Drawing up the plan:
Determining the approximate dimension of the table you want to make will give you an idea for making plans on the table’s design. Take a tape measure in your hand try to determine the dimensions according to the place you have to keep the table. The sketch will also help you in gathering the supplies needed for building the table.
3. Gathering needed supplies:
Once you are done with the planning section, you will get an idea of how much supplies you will need. Going around your neighborhood might help you in knowing if there are renovations going on. If you are finding houses being renovated don’t hesitate just go and ask them your need. They might surely be having wasted wooden blocks on the size you might need which is the cheaper and best idea.
4. Building the tabletop:
Based on the dimensions you have in your plan, cut the wood. Lay the old wood upside down in the work table, long edges against each other will be good for using. Securing the edges using the plywood brace will be helpful. Two braces from the back side will help in holding it with the table.
5. Trimming the tabletop edge:
Ripping off the extra pieces of lumber into half will help create an edge trim. Choosing butt jointed corners will be a good option. The measure, cut, glue and attach the edge with a finish nailer.
6. Building a second tabletop:
Redo the same steps from 4 to 5 to create another tabletop which looks alike the first one. Edge trims it as you have done with the first one.
7. Designing a checkerboard:
Choosing the side of the table where you want to paint the checkerboard should be determined. Using the painter’s tape you can measure and draw the checkerboard squares along the table. Using graph paper for sketching out will be a good idea. With the outline of the paper, you can spray paint or brush the uncovered squares. Removing the tape will give you the checkerboard.
8. Attaching it to the table legs:
Once you are done with the tabletop you can then fix it with the old table legs to make it stand. The heights of the legs can be modified according to your need and the space available. But the legs should be of the same size to avoid unevenness. Fix it using nails.
9. Final touches:
You can finish the tabletop with a bevel-edged tempered glass or those who are fond of can let it like that. But when you are leaving the wood just like that make sure you coat the top of the wood with some varnish to help keep the form of the wood the same.
Following these nine easy steps, you can design a tabletop gaming table within a small budget and can also spend some quality time doing something useful.
